OUR PROJECTS

DAN CAKE - Sta. Iria, Lisboa Portugal

Solar Energy Self-Consumption & Industrial Energy Independence

Project Summary

Location: Póvoa de Santa Iria, Portugal
Technology: Solar photovoltaic energy for self-consumption
Project analysis: August 2018

Project completion: 2019

Project Overview

The DAN CAKE Portugal project demonstrates how industrial facilities can reduce electricity costs, lower dependence on the public grid and strengthen long-term energy autonomy through on-site renewable energy generation.

The project was designed around a clear principle: generate electricity where it is consumed, reduce reliance on external energy suppliers and give the client greater control over energy costs.

Based on the facility's 2017 electricity consumption, the proposed photovoltaic system was forecast to generate approximately 662,958 kWh of renewable electricity per year, helping power the company's industrial operations.

The project was structured under an Energy Services Company (ESCO) model offered by Gas Natural Fenosa, designed to avoid the need for the client to make an upfront capital investment.

Key Results

  • 663 MWh of projected solar electricity generation annually.
  • €14,062.42 in estimated net savings during the first year.
  • €509,556.67 in cumulative projected savings over the first 15 years.
  • €2,207,167.01 in cumulative projected savings over 25 years.
  • Approximately 21.7% less electricity required from the grid, based on the report's annual consumption and projected solar generation.
  • Approximately 188 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions avoided annually, based on the projected solar output and Portugal's 2018 mainland electricity emissions factor.

Financial Savings and Long-Term Value

The feasibility study compared the facility's electricity costs before and after introducing solar self-consumption under the proposed ESCO arrangement.

Under the report's assumptions, the project would generate immediate savings from commissioning, without requiring the client to fund the installation through its own capital or additional credit.

The 25-year financial projection assumed a 3% annual increase in grid electricity costs and a 0.5% annual increase in applicable contract costs during the first 15 years.

The report projected total cumulative savings of more than €2.2 million over 25 years, equivalent to an average of approximately €88,287 per year.

These figures are historical feasibility-study projections, not verified operational results.

Environmental Impact

Generating renewable electricity on-site reduces the amount of electricity that must be purchased from the public grid and can reduce the emissions associated with conventional electricity generation.

The proposed annual solar output of 662,958 kWh corresponds to an estimated avoidance of approximately:

188 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions per year.

This estimate uses the Portuguese Environment Agency's 2018 emissions factor of 0.283 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent per MWh for mainland Portuguese electricity generation. Actual avoided emissions depend on the electricity displaced and the applicable emissions factor.

Beyond Savings: Energy Autonomy

The strategic value of this project extends beyond financial returns.

On-site energy generation enables industrial clients to produce their own electricity, reduce exposure to electricity price increases and gain greater control over a critical operating resource.

This is an important step towards energy independence: reducing structural dependence on external energy supply and strengthening the resilience of industrial operations.

The proposed system was designed for self-consumption, not complete disconnection from the grid. The report does not include battery storage, and the facility would continue to require grid electricity when solar generation was insufficient.

The Vision

Energy should not be treated solely as an operating expense. It is a strategic asset that influences industrial competitiveness, financial resilience and business continuity.

This project illustrates how carefully designed self-consumption systems can turn energy expenditure into a long-term strategy for cost optimization, renewable generation and greater energy autonomy.

DAN CAKE - Coimbra, Portugal

Solar Energy Self-Consumption & Industrial Energy Independence

Project Summary

Location: Coimbra, Portugal
Technology: Solar photovoltaic energy for self-consumption
Project analysis: August 2018

Project completion: 2020

Project Overview

The DAN CAKE Portugal project demonstrates how industrial facilities can reduce electricity costs, decrease dependence on the public grid and improve long-term energy autonomy through on-site renewable energy generation.

The project was designed around a simple principle: generate electricity where it is consumed, reduce reliance on external suppliers and give the client greater control over its energy costs.

Based on the facility's 2017 consumption profile, the proposed photovoltaic system was forecast to generate approximately 649,073 kWh of renewable electricity per year, directly supporting the company's industrial operations.

Key Results

  • 649 MWh of projected solar electricity generation annually.
  • €19,476.82 in estimated net savings during the first year under the proposed energy services contract.
  • €588,600.85 in cumulative projected savings over the first 15 years.
  • €2,256,601.84 in cumulative projected savings over 25 years.
  • Approximately 26% less electricity required from the grid, based on the report's annual consumption and projected solar generation.
  • Approximately 184 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions avoided annually, using Portugal's 2018 mainland electricity-generation emissions factor.

Financial Savings and Long-Term Value

The feasibility study evaluated a self-consumption model offered under an Energy Services Company (ESCO) arrangement, designed to avoid an upfront capital investment by the client.

Under the report's financial assumptions, the project would deliver immediate savings from commissioning while protecting the business against rising electricity costs.

The 25-year financial projection assumed a 3% annual increase in grid electricity costs and a 0.5% annual increase in applicable fixed and variable contract costs. It estimated total cumulative savings of more than €2.25 million, averaging approximately €90,264 per year.

These figures are historical feasibility-study projections, rather than verified operational results.

Environmental Impact

By generating renewable electricity on-site, the project would reduce the volume of electricity required from the public grid and the associated emissions from electricity generation.

The proposed annual solar output of 649,073 kWh corresponds to an estimated avoidance of approximately:

184 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions per year.

This estimate uses an emissions factor of 0.283 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent per MWh for mainland Portuguese electricity generation in 2018, published by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA). Actual avoided emissions depend on the electricity displaced and the applicable emissions factor.

Beyond Savings: Energy Autonomy

The strategic value of this project extends beyond financial returns.

On-site energy generation allows industrial clients to produce their own electricity, reduce exposure to grid electricity prices and gain greater control over a critical operating resource.

This is an important step towards energy independence: reducing structural dependence on external energy supply and strengthening the resilience of industrial operations.

The proposed system was designed for self-consumption, not complete disconnection from the grid. The report did not include battery storage, and the facility would continue to require grid electricity when solar generation was insufficient.

The Vision
